The two 'branches' are the nodes you get to when you climb up to the MRCA and then back off one link, so you get the largest possible disjoint branches containing the two homonyms.
If these are very small, you almost certainly have a duplicate, and if they're very large, you almost certainly don't. The middle area (sum = 10,000 to 100,000 in this spreadsheet) needs scrutiny. There are 181 of these. With some work the number can probably be made smaller.
