Description: Since 1964, more than 30M insects collected and catalogued across the UK by Rothamsted Insect Survey (RIS). Between 2000-2003 the EU funded project EXAMINE (Exploitation of Aphid Monitoring IN Europe) established a common database for deposition and retrieval of data from the now Europe-wide suction-trap network. Original emphasis on aphids as major agricultural pests in UK. Informal group EURAPHID shares and utilises data and methodologies across Europe. Other countries including China, South Africa and New Zealand use the suction-trap to collect insects. RIS also uses light-traps to collect moths and has documented millions of months.

Good example of citizen science success. Selected data at RIS is being made Open Access
