- Taxonomy systems - ANSP
- One of the most important ways to help insure taxonomic consistency is to have all analysts use taxa names on a single list. A taxonomic system, as used in the Phycology Section, is a set of taxa names used for a particular person, or a group of analysts, for one or more algal counting project. Each algal count event is assigned a taxonomy number. This reduces the likelihood of using multiple synonyms for a single taxon. In the Phycology Section, this approach is implemented by having analysts count using the Tabulator program. In Tabulator, analysts select a particular taxonomic system as a source for selecting names to use, usually ANSP-2011 (26).
Because it is important for clients not to have names constantly in flux, we have a policy of keeping names used for NAWQA the same for three years at a time, and the same policy is used, in fact, even for non-NAWQA projects. Every three or four years, the ANSP list of names, ANSP-2011 (26), is reviewed at a taxonomic workshop and an updat

- Nomen.at - animals and plants
- Nomen.at is a dictionary of common names of animals, plants and other organisms. The main principle of including a name is "as used". This means that somebody used this name in a book, website or other document. The goal of collecting as many names as possible has priority over the quality of the names. A name and its translations should be found independantly of its quality in terms of valid, deprecated or invalid.
