Description: Hi!
I worked on this genus for my PhD, and there are no records whatsoever for Aethia pusilla from the Atlantic Ocean, and only one from Arctic Canada (Mackenzie Delta). Records from western Russian Arctic islands are also incorrect.

Not sure how to go about getting these fixed, but let me know if I can help.

Many thanks,
Alex

Looks like Atlantic records are all "human observations" from one dataset http://www.gbif.org/occurrence/search?HAS_GEOSPATIAL_ISSUE=false&GEOMETRY=-87.36%2020.63%2C-87.36%2084.09%2C133.07%2084.09%2C133.07%2020.63%2C-87.36%2020.63&TAXON_KEY=5229270 http://doi.org/10.15468/wwds1e (Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna)

On the face of it the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna dataset has some misidentified records.

Comment: Actually based on https://twitter.com/thelabandfield/status/696065375159590913 and looking at other species (e.g., Atlantic puffin http://www.gbif.org/occurrence/search?HAS_GEOSPATIAL_ISSUE=false&GEOMETRY=-159.44%2052.03%2C-159.44%2069.61%2C-104.34%2069.61%2C-104.34%2052.03%2C-159.44%2052.03&TAXON_KEY=2481353 ) I this dataset is broken. It looks like the birds are reported from every locality, so it's really a database of sampling localities not species. Would need to do a little more analysis to check (e.g., plot distributions of each species just for this dataset) but looks like it's borked. Yet another argument for having easy to use tools for people to check data before it's submitted to GBIF.

[~jlegind@gbif.org] can you get in touch with "Circumpolar Seabird Monitoring Plan" and verify their published data?

Comment: I think this is another example of absence being treated as presence [POR-2864].

Absence data has been removed from the dataset.
All remaining records should be legitimate.
