Is the .net required? At the moment, this just redirects to the GBIF homepage. I don't know if it's been used in publications though.

Both domains expire on 2 February, and I'll start the renewal process in December, and transfer them to the new, cheaper registrar at the same time.

Should the redirect to be set up before then?

Comment: gbic2012.org redirects to biodiversityinformatics.org, so this should be updated at the same time. (gbic2012.org expires in February 2017.)
