Comment: Since it's a personal laptop, rather than Windows XP just try Ubuntu Linux. Our CFO will just love it... :->

Spent 4h on the issue, no luck, call it a quit; lessons learned:

1. The cheaper the BRANDED equipment, the harder to install Linux
2. The only video driver which woks no matter what in Linux is the Intel one.
3. If Intel not an option, use NVIDIA: their installer makes a mess but at least works.
4. Stay away from ATI.

Conclusion: Cheap HP laptop with an ATI adaptor => No Linux. :-s
