Description: As far as I can tell, there are no tools to filter datasets other than free text searches. In particular, I would like to be able to view all datasets about a given taxa (Aves, or Lepidoptera) which include records from a given location (country or finer scale). A system similar to the IUCN Redlist Advanced Search would be ideal (you can select taxa and locations, as well as filtering by, e.g. status).

There is no direct way of filtering datasets by species keys, but on every backbone taxon page you will find an Appears In section which lists all datasets that treat this taxon. For example for Lepidoptera:
http://www.gbif.org/species/797#appearsin
If you like to filter by taxon and location you can use the regular occurrence search and download your results.
That file then contains a list of all datasets with the number of records matching.
