Issue 10710

Display endpoints on Dataset page

10710
Reporter: kbraak
Type: Task
Summary: Display endpoints on Dataset page
Priority: Major
Resolution: Fixed
Status: Closed

Description: Try making a new block on the page for endpoints. It should clearly indicate the type of endpoint, and perhaps a trimmed version is displayed that links out.

For alternative display ideas, please list them here.]]>

Two screenshots of latest work.

Notes:

1) Please note this block is directly under the summary at the top, so perhaps it is better placed somewhere down near the bottom?

2) Please note a warning dialog helps the user understand that this is a link to the original metadata, and it may be different from the indexed version. On the page, there will be 3 links to EML: Original (this one), merged, and cached (verbatim).

3) It is trimmed to only show the first 50 characters, and there is nothing else in the right sidebar. Maybe we make the URL stretch across the entire block, with no right sidebar.

yes, I would also suggest to truncate the links only just before the end of the block to avoid line breaks.
To do so a table or list with a fixed column width for the headings would be good.

The title "endpoint" might be a bit unclear to most users. Maybe "Online Services" or "Links" is more clear?

Should this really be a new block in the main section of the page? The basic layout scheme is that the main data content is displayed in the main block, while additional information (summary, external links, statistics etc) sit in the third on the right. To stick with this, I would think the endpoints should sit in the right third of the summary block.

Agree, Andrea.
Just that the summary block is already packed with info on the right hand side. Would it make sense to put it next to "Dataset usage & legal issues" that doesn't have a right column at all yet? These are links for data usage mostly, so its not completely off.

Both options are presented: external links displayed in the right sidebar of summary, and in the right sidebar of dataset usage.

I have only chosen to display the type. One improvement I'd also like to make is display a proper name instead of the enum DWC_ARCHIVE for example.

Comment: right. We need to use resource bundle entries for all enum values anywhere - e.g. also for CHECKLIST

Comment: The final decision is to show it in the right sidebar of the summary block. The resource bundle entry is now used for the enum value also. Closing issue.
