Description: From email:

This is just to hand this over as a task/issue. When we launch the new portal, can we make sure we have a general disclaimers page that includes some statement on map representations like that suggested below. This is important for our dealings with many countries.

Thanks,
Donald

Subject: Island territories

Dear Donald,

I have just read the executive summary of the WB report: Turn down the Heat – I have listed on the bulletin board for those interested in reading it. It is a 4 degree scenario analysis focused in particular on effects on the developing countries.

It has the following disclaimer:

The World Bank does not guarantee the accuracy of the data included in this work.
The boundaries, colors, denominations, and other information shown on any map in
this work do not imply any judgment on the part of The World Bank concerning the
legal status of any territory or the endorsement or acceptance of such boundaries.

Perhaps we could benefit from a similar one on our web-site maps with a small modification:

GBIF does not guarantee the accuracy of the data included in this map.
The boundaries, colors, denominations, and other information shown on maps downloaded from the GBIF web-site
do not imply any judgment on the part of GBIF concerning the
legal status of any territory or the endorsement or acceptance of such boundaries.

That should show up on any map request of a map download with geographical coordinates.

If this would be useful we could try to see if this text could help solve disputed territories.

From email chatter:

Tim H.:
I agree that the important thing will be to show prominently that the representation of countries, territories and islands is based on ISO 3166. In this respect, however, bear in mind that ISO establishes the codes but NOT the country names which are updated regularly based on UN sources (see http://www.iso.org/iso/home/standards/country_codes.htm). I raise this because I noticed that the West Bank designation was recently changed from Palestinian Territory, Occupied to Palestine, State of (see http://www.iso.org/iso/country_codes/iso_3166_code_lists/country_names_and_code_elements.htm) - but the former title is still showing up in the new portal (see http://uat.gbif.org/occurrence/search?GEOREFERENCED=true&COUNTRY=PS). So it is going to be very important to capture updates notified by ISO in our representation.

Another, linked issue is how we represent non-country entities in the 'country page' - especially relating to 'data from'. For a later conversation.

Comment: [~thirsch@gbif.org] and [~trobertson@gbif.org] - is this covered by the "Names of countries, territories and islands are based on the ISO 3166-1 standard." line at top of country page? And can this issue therefore be closed?

Comment: No, the proposal is to have a more general disclaimer page and link to it from a new footer. My task. So leave open please.

[~thirsch@gbif.org], can we close this issue now that the disclaimer page exists and is linked from the footers?
