Issue 10421

Interpret species distribution range areas

10421
Reporter: ahahn
Assignee: mdoering
Type: Improvement
Summary: Interpret species distribution range areas
Description: Species distribution ranges are given as verbatim area names which can be very cryptic in many cases. We need to interpret these areas and provide standardized names or even shapes for them

Comment: What do the "references" on the right stand for? Occurrence records? Literature? Information available from ChecklistBank?

Comment: I agree they are often cryptic. We will need to have some area lookup/repository/thesaurus that knows about those identifiers like the TDWG regions here. The links are no links at all - it was just a visuality design that we kept. There are no links in the distribution data

No clear idea what "references" mean, but I assume these distribution records from checklistbank? This requires that we a) understand the area ids and b) do some stats beforehand.

We could also show the occurrence stats here, but they are already in the map section, so I think we should not mix data here and stick to clb distribution records only
