Please compare with https://gbif.basecamphq.com/projects/7935093-portal/todo_items/110485008/comments - is this covered?

The questions is more where in the portal one should be able to browse the root taxa. I would think its natural to start on the checklist dataset page by simply showing the taxonomic browser widget there too?

There was some discussion around the dataset page, resulting in the decision that it should not give access to the checklist content, but focus on the checklist metadata. In this sense, the dataset page for checklists displays taxonomic information only insofar as it is supplied with the metadata, not with the checklist itself. Part of the reasoning behind that was that some checklist publishers were not to publish their full data content through GBIF, but only give an overview through their metadata, so that we should in that position not link through to the full data content.

If thats the case then this issue still remains a valid one. How do I browse the taxonomy without a search?

Do dataset metadata allow to reliably identify one or several root taxon/a? If so, the "Taxonomic Coverage" hook in the Checklist Preview box at http://staging.gbif.org:8080/portal-web/dataset/1 would feel like a good link to the taxon browser on Species pages filtered for the specific checklist.

Not at all, no. I would even think we don't have ANY taxonomic coverage in any of our current checklist metadata.
Btw, whats the difference between the single TAXONOMIC COVERAGE on the right and the names on the left?
Replacing the left preview content with the taxonomic browser and only listing the keywords on the right under tax coverage seems like a really nice solution to me otherwise.

In the checklist dataset page (http://staging.gbif.org:8080/portal-web/dataset/1), replace the current metadata view in the "Checklist preview" block with the taxon browser module. Need to discuss: do we need to cater for "external data" checklist datasets, where only metadata are existing - does this stick with the current representation?

Good. External data datasets should not show up as checklists, but as generic datasets. Only indexed checklists will appear as such. So this is not a problem
