Comment: Well spotted Burke. Hopefully [~thirsch@gbif.org] and Sampreethi can explain whether this page has been activated/published yet or not.

Comment: Thanks for pointing this out - unfortunately the pdf has already gone out to the mailing list, but I am asking Sampreethi to fix this link on the version online via the website.

Hi - a recent feedback from TaiBIF colleagues, pasted here. It looks like it's still not easy for them to direct people to news items/letters on the new portal.

===
When I clicked on the link
given on the latest GBits 36: "GBits archive:
http://www.gbif.org/communications/resources/newsletters/" I got:

-----
Page Not Found. We are sorry, but the page you requested does not exist.

You may be following an outdated link based on GBIF's previous portal which
was active until September 2013 - if so, you may find the content you are
looking for here:
http://www-old.gbif.org/communications/resources/newsletters
-----

It's the same url you gave me some time ago and the list given on the page
stops at GBits 35. My questions are: (1) What is the link now to reach all
the GBits? The "News" on the top bar doesn't lead me to them. (2) When I
used "gbits" as search word on homepage, the display of GBits-related
articles is all mumble-jumbled. Why are the results not in any order like
the old site?

Comment: Sampreethi and Cip are currently implementing a new page including links to the full Gbits archive, which will be tabbed from the Newsroom landing page and also from the drop down list of menu headers

Comment: GBits archive is at http://www.gbif.org/newsroom/newsletter, and the link in the last issue of the newsletter has been updated. So, am closing issue.

I suggest we should place an URL redirect/rewrite that leads
http://www.gbif.org/communications/resources/newsletters/
To the current URL of the news archive.

I believe old issues of newsletter could still be used or referred. By placing such a rewrite rule at the web server level we can easily maintain the integrity without going back to all old issues and fix all URLs.

Comment: This sounds sensible. Can you implement, Cip? In fact we can suggest similar redirects for urls on recent promotion material e.g. the GBIF brochure to appropriate pages on the new portal. I will make some suggestions offline.

Comment: OK, I've added an alias added but [~thirsch@gbif.org], if I may add my 2c? I'm afraid we're opening a can of worms here with the old URL aliases; past a certain number they'll quickly become unmanageable. :-(

I can see the link http://www.gbif.org/communications/resources/newsletters/ points to a 404 page, suggesting visitors to go to the old portal http://www-old.gbif.org/communications/resources/newsletters

But, why don't we point them directly to http://www.gbif.org/newsroom/newsletter ?

Also, I thought by some rewrite rules we can easily redirect old portal links to new ones. We should still consider doing that to reduce people's frustration of hitting broken links.

This is an automated message converting the requested gbif.org url to a www-old one, which is useful as a default for many old, broken links.

However, we have discussed setting up redirects for a limited number of old urls we know to be in use e.g. those included in recent communication materials such as the GBIF brochure. On this basis, [~cvizitiu@gbif.org] could you please apply redirects as follows:

http://www.gbif.org/communications/resources/newsletters/ > http://www.gbif.org/newsroom/newsletter
http://www.gbif.org/orc > http://www.gbif.org/resources/summary
http://www.gbif.org/participation/outreach > http://www.gbif.org/participation/summary
http://www.gbif.org/governance/partnerships > http://www.gbif.org/whoweworkwith

Thanks - Tim

Comment: To correct my previous comment, only http://www.gbif.org/communications/resources/newsletters/ is not working. The rest is good. Thanks.
