Issue 14257

Dataset summaries for checklists should not say 0 records

14257
Reporter: feedback bot
Assignee: kbraak
Type: Improvement
Summary: Dataset summaries for checklists should not say 0 records
Description: On participant pages, Latest datasets published, checklist datasets all read "0 records" underneath, which presents an unnecessarily negative summary, suggesting the dataset is empty. It is also inconsistent with other areas e.g. in publisher pages where the equivalent summary reads "Checklist dataset". The wording should either stick with 'checklist dataset' or give for example number of species and/or taxa included in the dataset.

We are inconsistent in the display of checklists and occurrence datasets. Please see evidence gathered below:

For example, checklists published by a Publisher say "Checklist dataset" underneath the title.
e.g. http://www.gbif.org/publisher/1a3d9bef-baf1-4eb3-814e-f6e9ba670c04

Checklists published by a Node say "0 records" underneath the title.
e.g. http://www.gbif.org/node/af2a0fa1-4c8e-4bdc-8954-b1a55e32b0f1

Checklists published by a Country say "Aug 30, 2013. 249 records published by Enciclopedia de la Flora Chilena"
e.g. http://www.gbif.org/country/CL

For sure, we shouldn't be using records, but species/taxa instead.

We have a similar problem for occurrence datasets:

For example, occurrence datasets published by a Publisher say "Occurrence dataset" underneath the title.
e.g. http://www.gbif.org/publisher/b4370195-ab86-42a1-822a-96809e3d0384

Occurrence datasets published by a Node say "11,136 records, 10,997 georeferenced" underneath the title.
e.g. http://www.gbif.org/node/e1b85abc-61f9-430f-ba79-6813dec53a0f

Occurrence datasets published by a Country say "Oct 2, 2013. 1,160 records (1,123 georeferenced) published by Digitarium"
e.g. http://www.gbif.org/country/FI

[~mdoering@gbif.org] do you think we should apply the same format in each page (Publisher/Node/Country) ? This could be a good candidate for another macro. A short form dataset macro.

Comment: Indeed that would be good to harmonize that and I would try to settle on the richer version with dataset type and number of "records". If we can create another macro inside the records.ftl for this that'll be great.

A common macro is now used to display dataset list items across Country, Node, Network, Installation, Dataset, and Publisher pages.

[~mdoering@gbif.org], please see the screenshots attached to the issue, that show the before (left side) and after (right side) views of each page affected by the changes.

Still outstanding, is whether we should rename "records" to "taxa" for checklists. Do you have a strong preference?

[~mdoering@gbif.org] you answered the outstanding question above over Skype. You said:

we have species, taxa, usages or records. Ideally we should settle on one, but maybe thats an even larger effort to be done at some point.

Agreed.
