Sorting the results is maybe a complicated issue, we have to think in a smarter way of doing this; i think we have some options here:
1. Modifiy the autocomplete widget to allow ordering of results by rank: http://dev.gbif.org/wiki/display/POR/Species+autocomplete
2. Sort the results by name usage counts in the occ index (ascending) and rank (descending): in this way we will show in the autocomplete the name usages of lower ranks that have more occurrence records first.

I would go for rank first, then number of occurrences. If a user wants to select a true species and always gets genera and higher taxa he can still just type the start of the species epitheton and no higher rank matches should appear.
In general though Im not a huge fan of autocompletes at all

Comment: You can still type passer and press enter, then Apply, and it'll get auto replaced with the Passer genus. Given that, and the fact noone else has reported it, downgrading to Major.
