Summary: As a researcher, I want to search records by place name (island), so that I can easily summarise the documented biodiversity of that area
Description: "[I am] writing a paper on the plant genetic resources of the Greek island XXX in the Ionian Sea. I would be grateful if you could assist me by sending a download of all plant information from GBIF related to that island, so that I could summarise the number of species etc. documented in GBIF for that island." may require:
- searchable (standardised, indexed) place names for (natural) geographical entities (potentially also: lakes, rivers, mountains, bogs,...)
- use of lookup services / gazetteers to match coordinates against place names

Comment: [~ahahn@gbif.org] is this case handled by polygon selection in new portal?

Comment: Polygon search would not cover for place names like rivers (hard to capture by polygon), but good enough for things like islands for now, especially in combination with a locality (name) search. Province search (see http://dev.gbif.org/issues/browse/OCC-250) is a bit different and should still be considered.

Comment: If terms island or islandGroup were indexed, this type of search could be made possible. This is dependent on POR-992, extending occurrence.

Comment: searching island, islandGroup, locality or whatever dwc term else would only make sense if all records provided it and would also indicate all the various names for the same or overlapping places. This kind of named area search should really be done in a 2 level search, first search a placename database for an area with a polygon and then use that polygon to query occurrences. Otherwise we clearly miss far too many records or places.

Comment: I would remove the blocking issue. If a gazateer is used this is not blocking at all
