Description: In Events, it looks completely wrong to assign locations to 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland' . Can we manually change this to United Kingdom ? Not sure if it needs changing in IMS

Comment: Country comes from IMS. We can try and match the string then convert it to something shorter but... isn't that the official name to begin with? :-o

To my knowledge the country *official* names in our IMS are not always the ones we commonly use. There are short version and long version of names and sometimes it makes me wonder what the ruling is when we input these names. I understand names may come from the official documents we sign with ministries, but they may not be suitable for showing information on our website.

I suggest the administration group could have a review of all names of our participant countries in the IMS so as a result we have 3 fields of each node entry:
1) Official full country name: This follows the official documents signed between GBIF and participants. I.e. "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland", "The United States of America", "Kingdom of Norway", and "People's Republic of China".
2) Preferred full country name: This would be the one we pick first to show on portal pages, like [this one|http://www.gbif.org/country]. Most of them is consistent with ISO, but I wonder whether for example we could use "Tanzania" instead of "Tanzania, United Republic of", or "South Korea" instead of "Korea, Republic of". I imagine if we want to automate generation of country relevant report in the future, names like "Korea, Republic of" may not be the most commonly used version. At the same time I understand some names cannot be simplified to that form because of political concerns/confusions.
3) Node name: In IMS we also have names like NlBIF, DanBIF. These names in IMS may not be consistent with the registry. A merge would be needed.

I am not sure if I cover all cases but please correct me if I miss anything.

Comment: This is an issue to queue in event module before we cut off event syncing.
