Comment: I'll make all exchanges and queues durable which means they survive a server restart but messages won't be saved.

Comment: For our use case it probably also makes sense to make messages persistent so they survive a crash or server restart at the cost of performance and disk space.

Comment: Given the cost of rebuilding downstream bits (eg metrics cube) I think durable queues/exchanges plus persistent messages is the way to go.
