Description: Occurrence maps can currently be filtered on Preserved Specimens, Living Specimens, Fossils, Observations, and Unknown. There is quite focus on specimens, while most data in GBIF are observations.

It would be nice if maps could be filtered on Machine Observations, especially given the rise of sensor networks such as LifeWatch. See for example this recently published bird tracking dataset: http://www.gbif.org/dataset/83e20573-f7dd-4852-9159-21566e1e691e

As with the other values in the dropdown, this would be based on basisOfRecord, which currently provides two separate entries for observations: MachineObservation and HumanObservation. The incorrect "Observation" seems to be used as well (one can filter on this in the occurrence search): it would better be indicated as "Observation of unknown type" or "Undefined observation"

There are two ways to implement this:

1. Just add "Machine Observation.
+ Simple
- Not mutually excludable with other terms

2. Add "Machine Observation, Human Observation, Undefined Observation"
+ Mutually excludable with other terms (consistent the specimens)
+ Option to filter on Human Observations
- More work
- No longer an option to select Observations (just like specimens)

In the long term it would be nice if the GBIF portal has sections to highlight types of data: specimens, sensor networks, citizen science, etc. which would allow to make a stronger link with those communities.
