Description: Parsing the name: Astelia alpina var. novae-hollandiae
results in:
Genus=Astelia
specific=alpinaae-hollandiae
rank=SPECIES
type=SCINAME

It seems that if the epithet for variety begins with 'nov', then the specific epithet is concatenated with the part of the variety epithet after nov.

i.e. Astelia alpina var. novae-hollandiae becomes Astelia alpinaae-hollandiae

and fictitious species Genus species var. november becomes Genus speciesember
