Description: One of those edges cases caused by ignoring author names. The name _Strombus coronatus_ has been used for two species, _Strombus coronatus_ (Röding, 1798) and _Strombus coronatus_ Defrance, 1827. The occurrence records for _Strombus coronatus_ (Röding, 1798) in GBIF http://www.gbif.org/species/5935535 list Defrance 1827 as the author in their verbatim form (e.g., http://www.gbif.org/occurrence/695204112/verbatim ).
Based on:
Harzhauser, M., & Kronenberg, G. C. (2008). A note on Strombus coronatus Defrance, 1827 and Strombus coronatus Röding, 1798 (Mollusca : Gastropoda). Veliger, 50(2), 120-128. Retrieved from http://biostor.org/reference/132844
the following is the case:
1. _Strombus coronatus_ (Röding, 1798) is a _nomen oblitum_ (a name never really used) and is a synonym of the extant, Indo-Pacific species _Pseudovertagus aluco_
2. _Strombus coronatus_ Defrance 1827 is a _nomen protectum_ (a name that even a homonym is still valid) and is an extinct fossil found in Europe and North Africa, and is currently known as _Persististrombus coronatus_ (Defrance 1827).
GBIF's map for _Strombus coronatus_ (incorrectly labelled "(Röding, 1798) ") looks about right http://www.gbif.org/species/5935535, but the map for _Pseudovertagus aluco_ http://www.gbif.org/species/4609359 is clearly wrong as it combines the living marine species and the extinct European form.
