Description: OK, not really GBIF's problem, but the ION web site http://www.organismnames.com is incredibly slow and I believe it's because it is trying to call on old (probably prior to new portal) web service to fetch map for species. For example, the URL http://organismnames.com/details.htm?lsid=5115402 takes forever, when it renders it reports no map for GBIF.

Since some of us use ION, and I've been trying to persuade them to share data, it might be nice if we could fix this problem. My senses is that ION itself don't have the resources to do anything about this.

If we knew what call the ION site was making, maybe we could simply return a blank result? As it stands I suspect they are calling a gbif.org domain that may no longer exist, and their code can't handle this gracefully. Are there any logs that could be used to see whether requests are being sent from organism names.com?

More in hope than expectation...
